Signs That You May Need Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy may be necessary if the inside of one of your teeth (the soft pulp) has become infected. There is no need to worry if your dentist recommends this treatment. It can be performed easily and painlessly. Dr. Maria McMullin has been performing root canals and other dental therapies in Monroe, MI since 2003.

What is a Root Canal?

Beneath the hard enamel coating of each of your teeth, lies a tough layer called dentin. Beneath that layer lies a much softer tissue called pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.

Root canal therapy involves removing the pulp from an infected tooth, cleaning out the cavity and then filling it to prevent infection of the root canals. A root canal can prevent the spread of infection to the tissues around your tooth’s root and your jawbone. It allows you to keep your tooth, instead of extracting it.

Indicators that you may need a root canal include:

  • Persistent toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold foods
  • Fluid draining from the tooth
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Pain when chewing
  • Swollen and inflamed gums

If you think you may have a root canal infection, you should talk to your dentist as soon as possible. Ignoring it and delaying treatment can worsen the infection and cause the loss of your tooth.
